Popularity

Alhamdulillah tsumma Alhamdulillah

Have you ever dreamed to be popular? Hmm…

Can you ever imagine how to live when everyone is watching and following every single things you do, even on personal matters? Hmm…

If you are so popular like an artist, how are you going to have a walk in town without no one noticing your presence? Hmm…

Do you like to have bodyguards with you 24/7? Hmm…

Etc. etc….

Some people did not choose to be popular, but the became popular. Some other people want to be popular, and they did. But what’s the point of becoming popular if we end up having a really messy lives?

Its not wrong to become popular, but it depends on your intentions.

Alhamdulillah tsumma Alhamdulillah

Last week we had a talk in the Masjid about Akhlaq. I forgot the name of the shaykh, but seriously, I never thought that he was the shaykh because he was so simple in appearance, very like an ordinary person.

Anyway, he was focusing mainly about the adab during eating. I was initially not really interested with the topic but then I said to myself, “Let’s just wait what he’s going to talk about, maybe there are some new things I might learn”. So I stayed.

And yeah, he mentioned the stuffs that I mostly already knew, but there’s one point really catch my attention. If you are in the middle of people, which you know what they like and dislike, and there’s one action that is sunnah, but the sunnah generally is hated by the people, are going to do it or not? Hmm…you might say, come on, its sunnah, you do it you get reward, forget about the people. But hey, have thought about what happen if you do it?

Well, the shaykh mentioned that it is better NOT to do it. Because you might give them a very bad impression about Islam. Then the people might start to say, “Hey, that’s not the religion I’m looking for”. Besides, its only sunnah, not fardh. Think deeply before you do something.

1st Week

Alhamdulillah tsumma Alhamdulillah

I’ve completed the 1st week of class. 15 week to go, but I’m not really going to count it. Anyway, I’ve to admit that it was a very tiring week, plus I was not really well. I managed to start off properly for 1st few days but it wasnt long before I ‘broke’ myself.

Its very very very important for me to keep my pace up. And the only way I’m going to do that is by keeping my relationship with Allah in a good form. No doubt about it. Once I start doing something really bad, then my entire life will be chaotic.

Its hard, but thats the reality. I know that very well and I’m determined to keep myself in a good shape, by Allah’s will.

There’s always something that motivate someone to do something, and so do I. And what motivates me is this ayat 9:111.

This lecture was recommended by my friend, Farhan Wahab. It was indeed a very good lecture and applicable to myself as I am involved in volunteer works.

Alhamdulillah, it is very enlightening and helps me to be better in organizing and managing my team. I did a huge mistake before and it was highlighted it this lecture, but alhamdulillah now I understand more how husnudzon plays such a big role in leadership.

I believe its not easy to achieve to that level of husnudzon, but that would not be the reason why I should not have it. InsyaAllah it will be part of tarbiah for me to be a better person and leader especially.

Getting Ready

Alhamdulillah tsumma Alhamdulillah

The spring semester is coming. The classes will formally begin this Monday insyaAllah. InsyaAllah this will be my 6th semester in Purdue doing Actuarial science. If everything goes well, I’ll be graduating in Spring ’11. May Allah help me to go through the next 3 semesters.

As of this semester, insyaAllah I’ll be taking not less than 12 credit hours. I’ve registered for 12, thinking of adding some more. InsyaAllah here are my classes for this semester:

  • STAT 473 – Actuarial Model II
  • COM 217 – Science Writing & Presentation
  • ARAB 302 – Arabic level 6 (though I’m pretty sure my Arabic is not up to this level yet)
  • MGMT 310 – Financial Management

I’m thinking of adding 2 other courses which both are for Arabic Conversation. They need special permissions as I actually should take those 2 classes when I was in Arabic level 4. Hmmm…I wasnt thinking about conversation, not until I realized that I couldnt master a language without actually practice to converse it. So…I’m still thinking about it. May Allah help me in both my academic and social life insyaAllah.

New Technologies

I used to be a person who really wants to have the latest product with the most advanced technologies available in the market. But money always be the issue. Alhamdulillah, at least something has stopped me from chasing all those products. If not, I’ll be wasting lots of money.

So yeah, I’m still following the news. We are moving from Nokia 3310 to Nokia N95, from Intel Pentium to Intel Core i9, from a huge and heavy TV box to a slim and light LED TV, etc. Huh…

I happened to buy Canon Camcorder HG20 and Nikon DSLR D60, but later I found that these things really stole my time. But I guess, I’m not going to sell them, because I can use it for my family and friends whenever needed. They indeed cost me some money.

Oh well, the most important thing is, you have to know what you really need before you buy something.

5 rules of dealing with opposite gender (by Shaykh Omar):

  1. Public or private space. This is mainly about the place where we are in. A public space is where it is accessible by public, or there are somebody else around us, or etc. For example lecture room/hall. But public space can be changed to private space for example, in a lecture room/hall, when there’s no one else except us (a male and a female).
  2. Age. There are different type of situation of it comes to age. For example, if we talk to someone from opposite gender and he or she is about the same age as us, then there are stricter rules applied to that situation.
  3. Mahram or non-mahram. There are also different rules applied when we are talking to mahram or non-mahram. Obviously when we are talking to non-mahram, stricter rules applied.
  4. Time. Time makes a huge difference. If we are talking to him/her during nighttime, stricter rules applied, compared to talking to him/her during daytime.
  5. Circumstances. I would directly give an example for this one. A man whose wive is about to deliver a baby, but the hospital has no female doctor, so at that time the man has no other choices except to permit a male doctor to handle the situation.

Some may ask, what are the stricter rules? Hmm…

5 Rules in Communicating with Opposite Sex

Alhamdulillah tsumma Alhamdulillah

One of the parallel session in Muktamar touched upon the issue of ikhtilat, or simply means pergaulan between male and female. This session was given to Shaykh Omar Baloch as I believe he could discuss the issue from different angles.

I believe this has been a big issue nowadays, including in Islamic organizations. Even between brothers and sisters, this issue is inevitable to be raised up frequently, to maintain a good emotional and spiritual health among those who work in this righteous path insyaAllah.

Shaykh Omar revealed that there are 5 things we should consider before communication with opposite gender.

  1. Public or private space.
  2. Age.
  3. Mahram or non-mahram.
  4. Time.
  5. Circumstances.

InsyaAllah I’ll try to go one by one in the next posts.
